Pax Jolie-Pitt, eight, and Zahara Jolie-Pitt, seven, will join their little sister in Maleficent, which sees their mother take on the role of Disney's most famous villain in a version that tells the story from the point of view of the titular wicked fairy.
It was Uggie's first time in Paris and he had places to go, people to see. Thus after a book "signing" for the television cameras, a barking interview with a couple of French newspapers, and a quick photo call on the Champs Elysées with the Arc de Triomphe as a backdrop, Uggie hopped into a taxi. The celebrated Jack Russell, widely considered the real star of the Oscar-winning black-and-white silent film The Artist – move over Jean Dujardin – had a full day of engagements to promote his memoirs, Uggie: My Story.
Timothy Spall is to take the lead role in a new Mike Leigh film about the English landscape painter JMW Turner, Spall has revealed. The actor and the director, who worked together on films such as Life Is Sweet, Secrets & Lies, Topsy-Turvy and All Or Nothing, will reunite for the first time in a decade on the untitled project. Spall broke the news during an interview to promote his new film, Ginger & Rosa, directed by Sally Potter.
The British film-maker Tony Scott was on antidepressants and had taken sleeping medication before leaping from a Los Angeles suspension bridge in August but did not have cancer, a preliminary autopsy report suggests. The LA county coroner's office also confirmed yesterday that Scott's death was suicide, though his motive remains a mystery. A number of suicide notes reportedly contained no details of why the Top Gun director chose to kill himself.
Avril Lavigne has reportedly recorded a cover of one her fiance's best-known songs. Two months after she announced her engagement to Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger, Lavigne has made a version of How You Remind Me for the soundtrack of an upcoming anime movie. Lavigne will offer her track to One Piece Film Z, an upcoming adaptation of the manga series One Piece. Created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997, it is the bestselling manga series of all time: its 67 volumes of comics have sold around 300m copies, and there have been 11 movie adaptations so far.
Immersive theatre and cinema experiences are all the rage ... thanks to pioneering companies Punchdrunk and Secret Cinema. More recently the likes of the Experimental Food Society and Poietic have created immersive restaurants that turn dining out into a theatrical experience (levitating canapés, anyone?). So, it was only a matter of time before some clever clogs came up with the concept of immersive, or theatrical, accommodation.
He is the director who arguably invented the modern-day blockbuster in 1975 with Jaws, then developed the template with the high-octane Indiana Jones films and Jurassic Park, but Steven Spielberg has suggested he is no longer interested in action movies. During an interview on the US TV show 60 Minutes, Spielberg said his new film, Lincoln – about the 16th president of the United States – was far from an action-packed affair.
German director Werner Herzog is to return to fiction for his next project, an adaptation of DBC Pierre's 2003 novel Vernon God Little. The eclectic film-maker's last fiction feature was the eccentric My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done in 2009, and he has concentrated on documentaries in recent years, with Cave of Forgotten Dreams, about the Ardèche cave paintings, and Into the Abyss, a study of Texas's death row.
Fans of the Assassin's Creed gaming franchise will already be eagerly awaiting the release of Assassin's Creed III on October 30, but now there's even more to get excited about: Ubisoft's planned Assassin's Creed film adaptation – set to star Michael Fassbender – has got itself studio backing from New Regency and a distributor in the form of Fox. Previously, Ubisoft had sought Sony's help in getting their movie made, but negotiations broke down over Ubisoft's desire to maintain more creative control.
