Decidono a questo punto di andare, insieme a Phil, Dorman e Lester a fare un lungo viaggio nel Texas per ritrovare DOM (una bottiglia di Dom Perignon seppellita tra le colline anni prima : il simbolo, per loro, della gioventù senza catene). In ogni caso, la meta sarà comunque Dallas, la città di Judy, visto che tutti (compreso Gardner, ex fidanzato della ragazza) sono convinti che il matrimonio debba comunque farsi. Il viaggio è costellato di incidenti e di avventure tra il grottesco e l'assurdo. Dopo una rutilante notte in un cimitero, in compagnia di ragazze conosciute per strada, illuminato da fuochi artificiali trafugati in un negozio e dopo la prova di coraggio di Phil, in una curiosa scuola per paracadutisti gestita nel deserto da un pilota svitato, che proverà le emozioni del primo lancio, il gruppo decide di organizzare le nozze. Lo svitato pilota, con il suo trabiccolo corre a prelevare Judy a domicilio per portarla nello sconosciuto paesello di confine con il Messico dove, con tramezzini, birra, luminarie e musica offerti dagli abitanti del luogo, abilmente coinvolti dai giovani. Dopo un Fandango con la sposa, Gardner sparisce : non andrà in Vietnam, mentre gli sposi partono per una fugace luna di miele. Gli amici si salutano, ognuno prende la sua strada : si ritroveranno ? La gioventù, purtroppo, non dura in eterno.
